Adventurequest 8-Bit Dungeons & Doomknights is a fun game. A funny game. A fun funny game. And maybe it’s my only complain: The fact that everything in this game is a joke is somewhat annoying, because after a while you start to wonder if it’s worth investing a lot of your time into a joke. But it’s fun, and it’s funny, so you continue playing. Is it any wonder they launched their Kickstarter campaign the 1st of April? Way to go, Artix!
This game is certainly good, at least by the NES standard. The overall design and gameplay elements look very polished. The world is huge, the different environments are varied. There are a lot of levers to pull, a lot of monsters to fight and a lot of jokes and puns to laugh at! There are two gameplay modes: a top-view and a side-scrolling platformer. Not sure if it is a good thing. It sure adds variety, but gameplay consistency would have been okay too. It’s like they couldn’t decide which one to use, so they included both.
Your doggo sidekick is a fun addition. It is more powerful than you think! I loved those moments of pure unleashed rage!
The music is nice, nothing to blow your mind, but there are a nice variety and it suits very well the mood of the gothic environment.
The graphics are great, but I think they could use a little more skull. I’m telling you, fellas, you gotta have more skulls!
The limited edition of the game is jam packed with goodies and extras, like a Pretendo Empower magazine, a cloth map, a poster and an 8-bit undead slayer certificate. Why an 8-bit undead slayer certificate? Don’t know, but it’s funny.
So overall, it’s a nice and enjoyable funny game. If you like zelda-vania games, but don’t need a profound and meaningful storyline, this game is for you!
My score: 8 skulls out of 10
